ESR acquires 100% stake in SG-headquartered Aquila Clean Energy

ESR to bring Aquila Clean Energy APAC onto its platform, adding a 1.6 GW clean energy portfolio across Asia Pacific

ESR, the Asia-Pacific real asset owner and manager focused on logistics real estate, data centres and energy infrastructure, has signed an agreement to acquire 100% of clean energy platform Aquila Clean Energy APAC (Aquila Clean Energy) from Aquila Group, a Hamburg-based investment and industrial development company.

The transaction value was not disclosed.

The investment positions ESR across these increasingly interconnected sectors, enhancing its ability to offer capital partners access to a broader range of resilient real asset investment solutions, the firm said in an announcement.

Aquila Clean Energy is a Singapore-headquartered clean energy platform that develops, owns and operates solar, battery storage and wind assets across the region.

The platform has a 1.6 GW portfolio of operational, construction and advanced development assets in the key Asia-Pacific markets of Australia and New Zealand, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan, offering significant capital deployment and value creation opportunities.

The platform adds to ESR’s presence across the region and aligns with its logistics real estate and data centre businesses. The acquisition also expands ESR’s existing solar and battery storage activities, giving it a broader range of renewable energy investments to offer capital partners.

“ESR has entered its next phase of growth with a clear focus on the sectors that underpin resilient supply chains, digital economies and long-term economic development. As demand for logistics infrastructure, data centres and power becomes increasingly interconnected, we see significant opportunities at the intersection of these sectors, with energy infrastructure becoming an increasingly compelling area for long-term capital deployment,” said Phil Pearce, President of ESR.

“Leveraging ESR’s platform capabilities, we intend to significantly scale the Aquila Clean Energy platform while maintaining a strong focus on returns and execution discipline, creating an attractive investment opportunity for our capital partners,” said Apurv Choudhary, Group Head of Infrastructure, ESR.

Completion of the transaction is expected by Q1 2027, subject to customary closing conditions and applicable approvals.

Following completion, ESR intends to work closely with the Aquila Clean Energy APAC management team to accelerate growth, scale investment solutions, and realise opportunities across ESR’s Asia-Pacific platform.

Roman Rosslenbroich, CEO and co-founder, Aquila Group, said, “That ESR, one of the leading real asset owners in the region, has chosen to acquire this platform is a strong recognition of Aquila Group’s ability to attract talented management teams and build category-leading industrial platforms.”
